Marriage?

After ancient time of matriarchy patriarchy came – the world of men. The problem was that at that time there was no way to prove paternity. Is it possible that the institution of marriage (the tying of a woman to her husband and the sin of adultery strongly programmed in our culture) plus the status of virginity of the bride were just a way of men to ensure purity of their line?
